John Newman III, a guard who played his first three seasons for the Clemson Tigers and said late last month that he planned to return to his hometown of Greensboro, North Carolina, to play for UNC Greensboro, tweeted Tuesday night that he'll instead follow former UNCG head coach Wes Miller to Cincinnati to play for the Bearcats as a senior.
The 6-foot-5 Newman averaged 3.7 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 15.6 minutes per game over 22 games last season. As a sophomore, he started all 31 games in which he appeared for Clemson, averaging 9.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.
Miller will have no shortage of guards, as David DeJulius has said he'll use his extra year of eligibility to play again for the Bearcats. Mike Saunders Jr., Mason Madsen and Jeremiah Davenport all have vowed to return to UC, and Mika Adams-Woods reportedly will join them.
UC parted ways with John Brannen - the Bearcats' head coach the past two seasons - earlier this month, hiring Miller to replace him. Miller agreed late last week to a six-year, $7.875 million deal to be UC's head coach.
