NCAA Football was an American football video game series developed by EA Sports in which players control and compete against current Division I FBS college teams. The series is a younger brother to the Madden NFL series.

In July 2013, the NCAA announced that it would not renew its licensing contract with Electronic Arts because of an ongoing legal dispute regarding the use of player likenesses in the games. However, this contract only covers the use of the NCAA name and related logos, not those of individual schools and conferences, which are negotiated individually or through the Collegiate Licensing Company. The CLC concurrently announced that it would extend its existing licensing deal with EA through 2017, ensuring that EA Sports could continue the series without the NCAA branding. However, the series was placed on hiatus in September 2013, following three major conferences pulling their trademark licenses from EA, and uncertainties surrounding the results of lawsuits involving the use of player likenesses in-game. However, EA Sports is still making an attempt to get the series back going.

Players' real names and exact likenesses are not used in the game. While the Madden NFL series uses real player names and likenesses, those players are compensated for the use of their image. Due to NCAA restrictions on the amateur status of athletes, names are not allowed. Additionally, current college players cannot be used as cover athletes. Instead, each cover features a player whose college eligibility ended the season before the game's release, wearing his former college uniform. The only two exceptions have been the Wii version of NCAA Football 09, which featured Sparty, the mascot of Michigan State University, on the cover, and NCAA Football 06 when Desmond Howard was featured on the cover striking the Heisman Trophy pose during his career at Michigan, despite not playing for Michigan for more than 15 years.

Although EA Sports does not claim that the players in the game represent real life players, the jersey number, position, height, weight, home state, and ethnicity are aligned with the real players. Fans of any particular team are sure to recognize their favorite players (for example, in NCAA Football 2014, University of North Carolina Tar Heels QB #2 would correspond to QB Bryn Renner). Actual usage of a player's real name would be in violation of the NCAA's policy regarding student athletes. Amateur "roster makers" will often manually associate player names and will upload a roster file to the built-in roster sharing system. As of the 09 release, EA has put in the EA Locker feature which allows remote roster sharing online through either Xbox Live or PlayStation Network depending on the console.

  1. I don't understand why they don't just make a deal to use the college schools randomly generate generic players and make em not customizable so no likeness worries.. then contract NFL players and legends for there MUT mode.. and in dynasty mode after a year or 2 of recruiting you have generic players anyway . Really dragging this out and making it way more complicated then it has to be

  2. NCAA, like college in general is a scam. ? sad players should get paid, especially in sports where they can be injured badly like Alex Smith or Joe Heisman or Ryan Shazier an the rest.

  3. The only reason I still have a xbox 360 is because of the NCAA Football '14 video game. It's been almost 7yrs since it released and I've won a national championship with every single school and my main dynasty is past year 2100.(Started over a few times just for the challenge to work my way up from assistant to head coach)

  4. We need a gaming company to step up and make computer generated rosters with the schools name and likeness. I’m tired of 2K and EAs bull shit we need whoever creates RBI baseball or MLB the show to maybe step up.

  5. For those saying let 2k make the game. You must not be old enough to remember that they used to make a game and it wasn't anywhere near as good as their other sports games. EA was just way better at making college football games.

  6. Can't the athlete make their persona a company brand, and in turn the brand strike a licensing deal for the schools logo with the school themselves?

I'm reading that the NCAA can't touch this agreement when schools themselves in their FAQ:

"The NCAA does not manage or monitor the licensing agreements of the conferences, schools or its other member institutions."

    https://www.ncaa.org/championships/marketing/ncaa-licensing-program-faqs

I think there is work around here if the athlete creates a legal brand and then pursues the school directly since the NCAA has no ability to block that action. Just cut the NCAA out of the equation and call them out in it.

  7. Screw the NCAA this shit went harder then Madden plus they makeing billions of college games pay the guy's the fans came to see nobody goes to the game to look at coaches and ref they came to see the team pay up

  8. I don’t understand. Madden 20 you can play in the college playoff with 12 real college teams with a. Fake roster. Why can’t they make NCAA. It’s the same thing.

  9. I just want a game where I can have a custom player, play high school ball, comit to a college, play the 4 seasons and get drafted. Is that too much to ask for?

  10. I told u this 3 months ago in the comments u didn't believe my favorite game of all time I want NCAA back but it's not gonna happen all u did was get people's hopes up when u knew it was never gonna happen!!!!???

  11. Real rosters are overrated anyway 5 years into a dynasty all rosters are brand new anyway! Back in the day in the day as a BAMA fan going all the way back till like NCAA 05 id go through and name every player on the team!

  12. If ea never make a new ncaa game they should make there own college football game without using the teams and players from the ncaa nut they could make teams like the real ones but not exactly the same. They should also have the same mechanics and game features from ncaa 14 and more. I know it may not be realistic but this could be the best option if the ncaa does not let ea use its players and teams.
