Police, EMS on scene of crash on US 50 in Greendale
KEVIN: PRETTY MUCH A WASHOUT. HOW MUCH MORE RAIN WE HAVE AHEAD OF US AND IF IT WILL CAUSE ANY ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS. MIKE: HEAVY RAIN LEADING TO BONDING ON THE STREETS. WHY DRAINAGE BECAME SUCH A PROBLEM. AND TONIGHT, THE PRESIDENT CALLING FOR CHANGES WHEN IT COMES TO AIRBORNE OBJECTS. DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN THOSE EDWIN:DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN THOSE THAT ARE LIKELY TO POSE SAFETY AND SECURITY RISK THAT NECESSITATE ACTION AND THOSE THAT DO NOT MIKE: THE NEW TEAM TO REGULATE U.S. AIRSPACE. PLUS, -- >> WE WILL GO THROUGH THIS PROCESS WITH THE CITIZENS OF EAST PALESTINE FOR AS LONG AS IT TAKES. MIKE: PROMISING WILL HELP TO CLEAN UP A TRAIN DERAILMENT IN OHIO. WHY SENATORS SAY THE RESPONSE ISN’T ENOUGH AND CONCERN FELT HERE IN CINCINNATI. >> THIS IS WLWT NEWS 5, LEADING THE WAY. SHEREE: CLOUDY SKIES ARE A GOOD THING TODAY. IT PUT A DAMPER ON THE SEVERE WEATHER CHANCES WE WERE FACING TONIGHT. THANKS FOR JOINING US AT 5:00, I AM SHEREE PAOLELLO. MIKE: AND I AM MIKE DARDIS. WE ARE LEADING THE WAY WITH TEAM COVERAGE ON THE IMPACT OF HIGH WATER AND THE ROADS TO WATCH OUT FOR. LET’S BEGIN WITH KEVIN ROBINSON, OUR CHIEF METEOROLOGIST. EARLIER WE WERE CONCERNED ABOUT SOME PROBLEMS TONIGHT, IT SEEMS WE HAVE SEEN THE WORST OF IT, RIGHT? EVAN: WE HAVE. WE REALLY LUCKED OUT. YESTERDAY WE HAD THREE OF THE NUMERAL OR NECESSARY COMPONENTS FOR SEVERE WEATHER, BUT THAT FOURTH COMPONENT BEING INSTABILITY, IT WAS ALWAYS QUESTIONABLE AND LACKING, AND AS A RESULT, WE LUCKED OUT, WE GOT BY WITHOUT ANY SEVERE WEATHER AND NO TORNADO THREAT. NO OF COURSE WE HAD THE ISSUES WITH WET WEATHER THIS MORNING WITH THE HEAVY RAINFALL, BUT OVERALL WE ARE PAST THE WORST OF THE SYSTEM. STILL SOME RAONIC TO BEHEAD, BUT NOT LIKE IT WILL BE A PARTICULARLY WET EVENING. IF YOU ZOOM IN THREE PARTS OF BUTLER COUNTY, NORTH OF HAMILTON, MIDDLETOWN AND NORTH TRENTON AND OXFORD, WE HAVE POCKETS OF HEAVY RAIN, MAYBE A QUICK RUMBLE OF THUNDER OUT OF THIS. IT WILL SCOOT ITS WAY OVER TOWARDS MIDDLETOWN AND TRENTON IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF MINUTES, BUT THIS IS ABOUT IT IN TERMS OF THE WET WEATHER TO BE LEFT OVER THIS EVENING. SO OVERALL, SOME SHOWERS LEFT OUT THERE, BUT HERE IS FUTURECAST. YOU CAN SEE HOW THINGS BEGIN TO DRY UP OVERNIGHT. IN THE NEXT BIG STORY, THE COLD THAT WILL BE SETTLING IN BEHIND THIS EVENING’S WET WEATHER. I WILL HAVE A LOOK AT YOUR WEEKEND, COMING UP. SHERRY: THANK YOU SO MUCH, BEEN. THE HEAVY RAIN CAUSED A RUSH OF WATER ON THE ROADWAYS, DRIVERS ARE DEALING WITH FLASH FLOODING AND PONDING ON THE STREETS AND INTERSTATES. MIKE: WLWT NEWS 5’S BRIAN HAMRICK CONTINUING OUR TEAM COVERAGE. HE IS LIVE. IT TOOK A WHILE TO RECOVER THIS MORNING, BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS JUST SPOTTY RAIN TONIGHT AND WE GOT A BREAK. BRIAN: YES, MIKE. THIS IS LIKE AROUND TWO HERE. A BIT OF LIGHT RAIN AROUND FORT WASHINGTON WAY RIGHT NOW, BUT IT COMES AFTER A PUNISHING ROUND ONE. THAT IS A LITTLE BIT OF WATER! HEAVY RAIN BROUGHT A STEADY THRILL OF TROUBLE, AND IT WAS A FOOT OR SO DEEP APPROACHING THE EXIT TO RIVER , ROAD FROM 75. RAIN HAD CREWS RESPONDING TO PONDING ALL OVER. INCLUDING THIS SPOT. >> FORT WASHINGTON WAY, EXIT RAMP TO U.S. 50 FROM 71 IS A REALLY BAD AREA. BRIAN: ODOT SPENT ALMOST 6 HOURS CLEARING THE DRAINS TO GET RID OF THE STANDING WATER ON FT. WASHINGTON WAY. IT CAN BE A LENGTHY PROCESS, EVEN USING STEPHEN ADAMS’ FAVORITE MACHINE. >> THIS IS OUR MASTER POWER TO THE MACHINE. BRIAN: IT’S A HALF MILLION DOLLAR VACUUM WITH 10 WHEELS. IT IS DESIGNED TO CLEAR OUT THE DRAINS NO MATTER WHAT’S IN THERE . AND IT COULD BE ANYTHING -- >> BUMPERS, HUBCAPS, A LOT OF GRAVEL, DIRT, ROCKS. BRIAN: IN SOME PLACES, IT WAS JUST WET ROADS THAT WERE PART OF THE PROBLEM, LIKE HERE ON 71 NEAR KENWOOD. >> WE HAVE A WRECKER ON THE OUTSIDE LANE THAT’S GETTING ONE CAR, AND THEN ANOTHER ONE ON THE INSIDE LANE. BRIAN: BESIDES BACKUPS, THERE WERE SOME POWER PROBLEMS. DUKE HAS ALREADY MADE PLANS IF WINDS CREATE MORE ISSUES. >> DEFINITELY READY FOR THE STORM. WE’VE GOT AMPLE CREWS IN AND WE’LL HAVE THE DAY SHIFT AND NIGHT SHIFT COVERING IT UNTIL THE STORM MOVES THROUGH AND WE KNOW WHAT THE ULTIMATE IMPACT IS. BRIAN: MEANWHILE, ADAMS AND THE ODOT CREWS WILL BE READY TO WADE INTO WATER PROBLEMS ALONG WITH THEIR INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH MOBILE SHOP VAC. AND AT LEAST CREWS TELL US THAT THERE IS NO SENSORS, NO MONITORING SYSTEM TO TELL THEM WHEN THESE CLOGS OPEN, THEY JUST COUNT ON PEOPLE TO CALL AND WHEN THEY DO. LIVE, BRIAN HAMRICK, WLWT NEWS 5. BRIAN, THANK YOU. AND YOU CAN STAY AHEAD OF THE STORMS BY DOWNLOADING THE FREE WLWT MOBILE APP. JUST MAKE SURE YOU HAVE NOTIFICATIONS TURNED ON. AND WE’LL ALERT YOU WHENEVER SEVERE WEATHER IS HEADED YOU
