Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker, who managed the Cincinnati Reds from 2008 to 2013, is back in the World Series for the first time since 2002, when he managed the San Francisco Giants.
Baker's Astros advanced to the World Series with a 5-0 win Friday night in Game 6 of the best-of-seven American League Championship Series.
Baker, in his second season as the Astros' manager, is the second-oldest manager to win a pennant at age 72. It's the third World Series appearance in five seasons for Houston.
The 2002 World Series was the only other time Baker has reached the World Series as a manager. The Giants lost the World Series to the Anaheim Angels in seven games.
Baker won a World Series championship as a player with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981.
"Dusty loves the game. Dusty loves this team," the Astros' Alex Bregman told FS1 after the series-clinching win. "And ever since he's been here, it's been a blast playing for him. He's so smart. He knows so much about the game. Being able to pick his brain on a daily basis is really special."
Baker is among former Cincinnati Reds and players and coaches who starred at Greater Cincinnati high schools or universities in Major League Baseball's 2021 postseason.
