Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Tuesday that he'll "be curious to hear" feedback from National Football League teams that interviewed offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy for their head coaching vacancies about why he wasn't hired, according to NFL Network's James Palmer:
When the Houston Texans named Baltimore Ravens assistant David Culley their new head coach last week, it became clear that Bieniemy - a former Cincinnati Bengals player - will remain the Chiefs' OC regardless of whether his team repeats as Super Bowl champion with a win Sunday in Super Bowl LV.
Bieniemy was a running back and kick returner for the Bengals from 1995 to 1998. He became the Chiefs' offensive coordinator in Jan. 2018 after coaching the team's running backs for five seasons.
Bieniemy has said he would like to be an NFL head coach.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said last month that it would be crazy for an NFL team with a head coaching vacancy not to strongly consider hiring Bieniemy. Mahomes told KCSP 610 Sports that he encouraged Houston quarterback Deshaun Watson to suggest that the Texans hire Bieniemy.
"(Bieniemy's) track record speaks for itself," Mahomes added in the radio interview. "The type of man he is, the way he can control and be a leader of the locker room and the way that he coaches and schemes he brings to us. If he doesn’t (get a position as a head coach), people are crazy."
Watson reportedly pushed for the Texans to interview Bieniemy - in part based on Mahomes' recommendation.
Washington quarterback Alex Smith said he thinks it's ridiculous Bieniemy hasn't been hired as an NFL head coach.
