A look at the Western & Southern Open final four

The semifinals are set for Saturday at the Western & Southern Open.

World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty and two-time W&S Open finalist Angelique Kerber meet in the first semifinal. Barty defeated the three-time Major champion in the Wimbledon semifinals in July on her way to her second Major. Barty is in her 90th week as the No. 1 ranked player while Kerber held the top spot previously for 34 weeks. Jil Teichmann, the lowest-ranked semifinalist since 2017 who this week has upset World No. 2 Naomi Osaka and Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic, takes on No. 5 seed and 2016 W&S Open winner Karolina Pliskova in the other semifinal match.

This will be the first time since 2014 the women's semifinals will feature three former/current World No. 1 players.

Jill Teichmann reacts to a point during a match between Jill Teichmann (SUI) and Naomi Osaka (JPN) in the Western & Southern Open at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio on Thursday, Aug. 19, 2021. Teichmann won 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

In the men's draw, the top four seeds are the last four standing for the first time since 2009 and for the 13th time in W&S Open history.

Top-seeded Daniil Medvedev takes on No. 4 seed and fellow Russian Andrey Rublev, the first time since Switzerland's Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka in 2012 that two countrymen faced each other in the final four. Alexander Zverev, the Tokyo Olympic gold medalist and first German semifinalist since 2003, takes on No. 2 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in a battle of past ATP Finals champions in the second semifinal.
