What we know about the Purple People Bridge closing

The Purple People Bridge, a pedestrian bridge across the Ohio River, remains closed. Here's what we know about the bridge closing.

What happened?

On Tuesday, a large stone fell from the bridge into the first pier on the Cincinnati side and created a safety hazard.

In a Tweet, the city said the falling stone, "loosened one of the stones directly underneath” the Purple People Bridge.

Pat Crowley, the spokesman for the Newport Southbank Bridge Company, said the structure was reviewed Friday morning by a structural engineer, who is now drafting a report on the state of the bridge.

When will the bridge reopen?

There is no timeline on when the bridge may reopen. Crowley said the bridge will remain closed, at least, through the weekend. 

What's happening now?

The Newport Southbank Bridge Company, a private entity that owns the bridge, has been in contact with firms. A structural engineer is preparing a report on the bridge. It is unclear when that report will be complete
