Bob Huggins, the West Virginia Mountaineers' basketball head coach who spent 16 seasons as head coach of the University of Cincinnati Bearcats, agreed Thursday to a contract extension with WVU for multiple guaranteed years that will last until he decides to retire, according to a report from 247sports.com's Mike Casazza.
The extension that Huggins signed in November of 2017 was up for another negotiation by July 1, 2022. He is set to make $4.15 million in the 2021-22 season.
Huggins - entering his 15th season as WVU's head coach - ranks eighth in wins among coaches at Div. I programs with 829. His total of 900 as a head coach includes his wins at NAIA Walsh from 1980 to 1983. His 900th career win came in WVU's NCAA Tournament first-round victory.
Huggins told The Enquirer in June that he has no plans to retire anytime soon.
In March, Huggins was not among nine players and five coaches announced as finalists for consideration for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2021.
Huggins' record at UC from 1989 to 2005 was 399–127. Huggins talked to Da'Sean Butler - who played for Huggins at WVU - and Rob Dauster on The Field of 68 in February about why he switched from a shirt and tie to a pullover while he was the Bearcats' head coach.
Last season, Huggins was one of 10 men's basketball Naismith Men's Coach of the Year semifinalists announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. He was not one of the four finalists.
In February, Texas Tech head coach Chris Beard stopped in the middle of arguing with officials after he was ejected late in his team's loss to WVU to walk across the court and give Huggins a sportsmanlike and respectful fist-bump. After WVU's first win of the season against the Red Raiders - on a game-winning shot in the final seconds by former Moeller High School standout and current New York Knicks guard Miles McBride - Huggins celebrated by sharing a photo on Twitter with some heartfelt words about his team.
Last November, Huggins thanked former Reds broadcaster Thom Brennaman for visiting Morgantown to address WVU's team.
