$1.5 million in federal grants to build new program to investigate adult sex crimes in Kentucky


A total of $1.5 million in federal grants will build a new program to help investigate adult sex crimes in Kentucky.The goal of the sexual assault kit initiative is to focus on cold cases by testing older rape kits and new DNA.Part of the grant money will also allow Kentucky State Police to bring on three specifically trained sexual assault investigators and a criminal intelligence analyst.Gov. Andy Beshear said Wednesday's announcement is the latest effort to directly help crime victims and to prosecute offenders."The sole mission of the new initiative will be to investigate sex crimes with a focus on cold cases where the testing of older rape kits or new DNA gives the possibility for justice where hope has most likely been lost," Beshear said.Beshear also ceremonially signed House Bill 310 meant to protect people from violent offenders who cannot be held legally responsible for their crimes because of mental illness.
