This Memorial Day weekend you can raise a beer in honor of a fallen hero outdoors in downtown Mariemont for the first time.
That’s because the village is launching its new Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area in a zone roughly bounded by Wooster Pike, Oak Street, Murray Avenue and Madisonville Road.
During specified hours, a special plastic Dora cup purchased at any of the six participating businesses will be your ticket to outdoor socializing with adult beverages – not to a misdemeanor open-container charge.
Businesses in the Dora will sell the reusable 12-ounce cups and decide what to charge for them, Mayor Bill Brown said in an email.
Based on the cost of Dora cups in neighboring communities, he said, Mariemont is suggesting businesses in the Dora charge customers $1 for the first cup they buy along with the cost of the drink and then refill it for the cost of the drink alone.
All of the businesses with liquor licenses in the village are participating in the Dora, Brown said.
That includes the Mariemont Inn and The National Exemplar, its in-house restaurant; the Mariemont Theatre; the Emery Mariemont; The Quarter Bistro; Mio’s Pizzeria and the Dilly Bistro, Bar & Bottle Shop.
Brown said he and Councilwoman Maggie Palazzolo wanted to create a DORA in Mariemont “to support our businesses, particularly after such a difficult year.
'(We) hope that this will attract more visitors to Mariemont'
“(We) also hope that this will attract more visitors to Mariemont and encourage people to safely socialize outside.”
The Dora was approved by village council and the Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of Liquor Control.
Hours will be 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Friday hours will be 5 p.m. to midnight and Saturday and Sunday hours will be noon to midnight.
People must be at least 21 years of age to drink in the Dora.
Other local communities with Doras include Hamilton, Loveland, Mason, Milford, Montgomery and Wyoming.
