Former Cincinnati Bearcats standout Jacob Evans III will honor former LSU basketball player Wayde Sims by wearing No. 44 with Evans' new NBA G League team, the Erie BayHawks, according to a tweet from Andrew Lopez:
Evans was acquired earlier this week along with forward Omari Spellman by the BayHawks, an affiliate of the NBA's New Orleans Pelicans. The NBA G League is set to tip off Feb. 10 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Florida.
Evans grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where Sims was killed in 2018 after playing two seasons with the Tigers. Dyteon Simpson faces second-degree murder charges, accused of fatally shooting Sims.
The Minnesota Timberwolves traded Evans, Spellman and a future second-round draft pick to the New York Knicks for forward Ed Davis in November.
Evans, 23, was traded last February by the Golden State Warriors with D'Angelo Russell and Spellman to the Timberwolves for Andrew Wiggins, a 2021 first-round draft pick and a 2021 second-round draft pick.
Evans appeared in two games for the T'wolves after averaging 4.7 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game in 27 games for the Warriors in 2020. He averaged 1.3 points, .8 rebounds and .8 assists per game as a rookie for Golden State.
Evans was selected 28th overall by the Warriors in the first round of the 2018 NBA Draft.
