Every year, we hear about the dangers of real Christmas trees and how they can catch fire if not properly taken care of. But, one local fire department has some good news to report this holiday season. Colerain Township Fire Department has seen just one actual structure fire in the community since Thanksgiving. The fire was found to have been caused by a space heater."That is probably our best year," special projects manager Robert Rielage said. "I think the reason for that has been, people are home. People have smoke detectors."The department tracks structure fires during their "Keep the Wreath Red" holiday safety campaign that will wrap up New Year's Day. Rielage said now is the time to get rid of that live tree and holiday greenery.“What we would ask residents to do is to periodically check the needles. You can tell if they’re very prickly or if they’re falling. That’s the time when they need to take down the tree and basically get rid of it," Rielage said. You can do that by recycling it. There are several drop-off sites in Hamilton County.In Colerain Township, you pull into the city building and follow the sign that reads "Christmas Tree Drop Off."“What we do is, our public works and public services division takes those trees and mulches them up and makes a mulch that we can use now for our parks and recreation," Rielage said. Live trees should be cleared of all decorations and should not be wrapped in plastic.Other drop-off locations include Keehner Park at 7411 Barret Road and Beckett Park at 8650 Beckett Road in the West Chester Baseball Complex.In Colerain Township, the department will continue to collect trees until mid-January.
