Georgetown University Hoyas assistant coach Louis Orr, a Cincinnati native and former Withrow High School basketball standout and Xavier Musketeers assistant coach, died Thursday after a battle with pancreatic cancer, his family confirmed. He was 64.
Orr, who starred at Syracuse and played eight seasons in the NBA for the Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks, was hired as an assistant on head coach Patrick Ewing's Hoya coaching staff in 2017. He started his coaching career as a Xavier assistant in 1991 under Pete Gillen and continued on the Musketeers' staff until 1994.
"We developed a friendship and a brotherhood," Ewing said in a statement. "He was always someone I could talk to - we would talk about life, we would talk about basketball, we would talk about family. He will be truly missed and he will forever be part of this (Georgetown) program."
Orr was inducted into the Cincinnati Public Schools Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014. He starred at Withrow during the 1970s and was named the Public High School League Most Valuable Player and first-team all-city by The Enquirer as a senior. He also earned MVP honors in the Cincinnati-Dayton All-Star Game.
Orr, a four-year starter at Syracuse, was first-team All-Big East and an All-American as a senior. His No. 55 was retired by Syracuse.
From Orange head coach Jim Boeheim and Xavier head coach Sean Miller via Twitter:
Orr was an assistant at Providence and Syracuse after Xavier, and was the head coach at Siena (2000-01), Seton Hall (2001-06) and Bowling Green (2007-14).
