Members of the Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio Tibetan Association congratulate Mayor Aftab Pureval and give him letters of support from the Dalai Lama and Penpa Tsering, a Tibetan politician, after the swearing-in ceremony at the inaugural session of the city council held at Washington Park in Over-the-Rhine on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022.

In honor of the swearing-in of Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval, the Dalai Lama penned a letter offering prayers and good wishes.

The Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky Tibetan Association attended the Tuesday morning ceremony where they presented Pureval, who is of Tibetan and Indian heritage, with the letter from the Nobel Prize-winning Buddhist leader.

In it, the Dalai Lama wrote: "In all my interactions with Tibetans I have been encouraged to see that, despite living in new circumstances by and large they and their children are able to maintain their sense of identity while contributing to the development of their adopted country."

The Dalai Lama offered this hope to Pureval, who is Cincinnati's first Asian American mayor, and others of Tibetan heritage as they seek office.

"While being dedicated in their service for the benefit of others, I hope that they will be able to show an especially warm-hearted concern for the less fortunate members in their constituencies."

The letter is signed and dated Dec. 7.

Pureval said he was thrilled by the letter – and invited the Dalai Lama to visit Cincinnati.
