How to watch Cincinnati’s Christmas tree lighting

The Fountain Square Christmas tree — the centerpiece of the holiday season in downtown Cincinnati — will officially be lit on Friday night. Standing 56-feet tall, a massive Norway Spruce sits in the southwest corner of the square alongside the ice skating rink, where it will remain through the holiday season. Capped with a 5-foot-tall red Macy's star and adorned from top to bottom with lights, the tree is set to shine bright for the season. The tree will officially be lit during a 7:25 p.m. ceremony on Friday night. For those who are unable to attend in person at Fountain Square this year, the event will be broadcast live on WLWT News 5 starting at 7 p.m.In-person festivities will begin at 6 p.m. with live music from 2nd Wind Band and a special appearance by Santa Claus. The Macy’s Holiday Tree lights up the sky at approximately 7:25p and concludes with a dazzling firework show. The long-standing holiday tradition will take on new significance this year as Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley will share official tree-lighting responsibilities with Mayor-elect Aftab Pureval. Together, the city officials will illuminate the tree and symbolically kick off the holiday season in the Queen City.Live music will continue until 9 p.m. on the square. Ice Skating reservations are available. Patrons can make reservations for the ice rink session here. So what goes into picking the perfect Christmas tree? It's a Cincinnati tradition, and not just any tree will do."There are a couple of things we're looking for in a tree. The two biggest things are height and density," said Zach Napier, civic space portfolio manager for 3CDC.They want a full tree that's as tall as possible — hopefully standing somewhere between 50 and 60 feet. It's also important that the stem is hidden."The foliage on the outside has to disguise it," Dan Zuk, with Zuk's Tree Moving, said while the team looked around at the tree selection.
