Cincinnati Reds catcher Tucker Barnhart has been traded to the Detroit Tigers. The deal will send infield prospect Nick Quintana to Cincinnati.Barnhart, a two-time Gold Glove Award winner, had a $7.5 million option for the 2022 season.The 31-year-old Barnhart had been a career-long catcher with the Reds, who picked him up in the 2009 draft. He has served as Cincinnati's primary catcher for much of the past seven seasons.Barnhart, in each of the last six seasons, led the Reds in starts and innings caught. Over eight Major League seasons, he hit .248. He was also a two-time winner of the Joe Nuxhall Good Guy Award in the voting of the local chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of American and the Reds' Roberto Clemente Award nominee in 2018 and 2020. "Trading Tucker was a very difficult decision," said Reds Vice President and General Manager Nick Krall. "Having been drafted and developed by the Reds, our entire organization has a connection to him, and our fans love him.""But going into 2022, we must align our payroll to our resources and continue focusing on scouting and developing young talent from within our own system. He will be missed," Krall added.Quintana, 24, was selected out of the University of Arizona by the Tigers in the second round (47th overall) of the June 2019 first-year player draft.
