Scott junior Maddie Strong won her first individual state championship in cross country Friday at the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Class 2A meet in Paris at the Bourbon County cross country course.
Strong completed the 5,000-meter course (3.1 miles) in 18 minutes, 41.98 seconds, to beat runner-up Abigail Bastin of Lincoln County by 12.05 seconds.
Strong was coming off her second regional championship last week in Lexington, which was also her fifth top-three performance all-time in the regional meet.
Strong posted her third top-five performance in a state meet, and helped the Eagles win the team state championship in 2018 and 2019.
The Eagles finished second to Lexington Catholic in the team standings to win a team trophy.
Sophomore Ansley Lindloff finished 10th overall to win an individual medal. Grace Klim was 189th, Lorin Neal 35th and Helen Schafer 68th to account for the team scoring.
Highlands eighth-grader Ella Taylor finished 15th to lead the Bluebirds.
In the boys championship, Highlands finished fourth to earn a team trophy, earning that spot by a single point over Bell County (only the top four teams win trophies). That point was earned by Highlands freshman Chase Pawsat, edging Bell County senior James Arno at the finish line by barely more than half a second (0.59 seconds).
Senior Caden Schroeder led the way for Highlands in 13th place.
The state meet continues tomorrow with the 1A championships beginning at 10 a.m., and 3A at 3 p.m.
