Cincinnati Zoo’s Lightning the sloth on 24 hour birth watch


The Cincinnati Zoo is getting ready to welcome a new zoo baby.The zoo's Lightning the sloth is now on 24-hour birth watch, meaning she will be monitored 24 hours a day for the next several weeks until her baby is born.The 10-year-old sloth is due this summer after the zoo announced in October she was pregnant.Lightning was pregnant in 2021 but, sadly, gave birth to a stillborn pup in October. The zoo says they waited several months after the stillborn birth to put Lightning back with her partner, Moe, and they showed "immediate interest in each other and did what we were hoping they would do!"“Lightning is in good health, and we remain optimistic that she will deliver a healthy baby,” said Julie Grove, Cincinnati Zoo's zoological manager.Lightning will be kept behind the scenes until after she gives birth, the zoo says. If all goes well, Lightning and her pup will be available to the public beginning in July.Moe will still be in the Discovery Forest habitat.
