A new area code is coming to Cincinnati region: What to know

RICHARD: NEIGHBORS WE HAD A CHANCE TO TALK WITH JUST ABSOLUTELY SHOCKED BY THE SCENE THAT PLAYS OUT IN FRONT OF THEM WHEN SHERIFF’S ARRIVE AROUND 10:00 THIS MORNING. SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES SAY THEY HEARD THE SHOTS. THIS SCENE AGAIN UNFOLDING AROUND 10:00 YESTERDAY MORNING. CLERMONT COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES ARRIVING AT THE RESIDENCE ON RIEBEL RIDGE ROAD. DEPUTIES HEARD MULTIPLE SHOTS FROM INSIDE THE HOME, FOLLOWED BY SILENCE. CLERMONT COUNTY SPECIAL RESPONSE TEAM WAS CALLED IN. THE UNIT ENTERED THE HOME AND FOUND FIVE GUNSHOT VICTIMS, FOUR OF THEM DEAD. THE FIFTH VICTIM RUSHED TO UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER IN CRITICAL CONDITION. OFFICIALS NOT RELEASING A LOT OF INFORMATION, SAYING THEY DO NOT KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED YET. NEIGHBORS TELL US THE CASE MAY INVOLVE A MURDER-SUICIDE. >> IT IS A SHOCK. YOU DO NOT KNOW PEOPLE’S PAIN AND WHAT THEY ARE GOING THROUGH. IT HAS BEEN A FAMILY CENTERED STREET. IT IS SAFE AND NEVER HAD ANYTHING LIKE THIS HAPPEN, SO KIND OF SHOCKING. RICHARD: POLICE SAY THERE WERE NO SIGNS OF FORCED ENTRY, LEADING OFFICERS TO BELIEVE THE REST OF THE COMMUNITY IS SAFE FROM DANGER AT THIS TIME. THE CORONER’S OFFICE NOT RELEASING A LOT OF INFORMATION, NOT WANTING TO SPECULATE. ONE INDIVIDUAL IN CRITICAL CONDITION AS BCI CONTINUES TO LEAD THE INVESTIGATION. STEVEN: BUTLER COUNTY’S FORMER AUDITOR IS ASKING FOR A NEW TRIAL. KELLY: HE WAS FOUND GUILTY OF UNLAWFUL INTEREST IN A PUBLIC CONTRACT. HE WAS THEN REMOVED FROM PUBLIC OFFICE. REYNOLDS AND HIS ATTORNEYS APPEARED IN COURT CLAIMING THE STATE WITHHELD EVIDENCE IN THE TRIAL. THEY SAY EMAILS THAT MAY HAVE HELPED THEIR CASE WERE KEPT FROM DEFENSE ATTORNEYS. THOSE EMAILS WERE IN RELATION TO LAKOTA SCHOOLS’ PROPOSED GOLF TRAINING FACILITY AND REYNOLDS’ USE OF HIS OFFICE TO PUSH FOR THE FACILITY TO GET BUILT. STEVEN: CONTAMINATED SOIL AND WATER FROM THE TRAIN DERAILMENT SITE IN EAST PALESTINE IS HEADING TO TWO FACILITIES BUT ONE HAS BEEN UNDER THE EPA MICROSCOPE FOR YEARS. THE HERITAGE THERMAL INCINERATOR HAS A HISTORY OF VIOLATIONS AND HAS BEEN IN THE MIDDLE OF MULTIPLE LAWSUITS. IN 2007, THE COMPANY PAID A SETTLEMENT OVER CHEMICAL EMISSION CLAIMS. IN 2015, THE U.S. EPA REPORTED THE FACILITY RELEASE DANGEROUS TOXINS 195 TIMES INTO THE AIR OVER THE COURSE OF FOUR YEARS, EXPOSING THOSE NEARBY TO CHEMICALS THAT CAUSE CANCER AND EARLY DEATH. ANOTHER LAWSUIT IS STILL PENDING FROM 2020 TWO REGARDING CONCERNS OVER BURNING HAZARDOUS WASTE FROM THE U.S. MILITARY. ACTIVISTS SAY THEY ARE WORRIED. >> WE HAVE ONE OF THE HIGHEST CANCER RATES IN THIS COUNTRY. WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH. WE HAVE SACRIFICED ENOUGH. STEVEN: HERITAGE THERMAL SAYS IT IS PERMITTED TO MANAGE MATERIALS FROM THE DERAILMENT. KELLY: SECRETARY OF TRANSPORTATION PETE BUTTIGIEG IS CALLING ON MAJOR RAIL COMPANIES TO JOIN A VOLUNTARY HAZARD REPORTING SYSTEM THAT WOULD ALLOW WORKERS TO CONFIDENTIALLY REPORT SAFETY HAZARDS, INCLUDING CONDITIONS WHICH COULD LEAD TO DERAILMENTS. NO MAJOR RAIL COMPANIES CURRENTLY PARTICIPATE. HE IS GIVING THEM A WEEK TO REPLY TO HIS REQUEST, BUT HIS DEADLINE HAS NO REAL TEETH. THE ONLY PENALTY THEY FACE IS HE PLANS TO NOTIFY THE PUBLIC ABOUT WHICH COMPANIES DID NOT JOIN. THE WHITE HOUSE HOSTED A RECEPTION LAST NIGHT TO CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH. Customers in the overlay region should:

  • Continue to dial 10 digits for all local calls, including calls within the same area code.
  • Continue to identify your telephone number as a 10-digit number, and include the area code when giving the number to friends, family, business associates, customers, etc.
  • Ensure all services, automatic dialing equipment, or other types of equipment recognize the new 283 area code as a valid area code and continue to store or program telephone numbers as 10-digit numbers.
