Cincinnati Reds opened the MLB season on the road twice since 1890

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Luis Castillo (58) delivers a pitch in the first inning of the MLB Opening Day game between the Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals at Great American Ball Park in downtown Cincinnati on Thursday, April 1, 2021. The Reds trailed 11-4 in the fifth inning.

With Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred's announcement Tuesday that Opening Day has been canceled along with the first two series of the 2022 season, the Cincinnati Reds could be forced to start a season away from home for just the third time since joining the National League in 1890.

The 1966 Reds had to start the season in Philadelphia because their entire three-games series against the New York Mets that was supposed to start the season at Crosley Field was rained out.

The 1990 Reds - which won the World Series after a wire-to-wire season - started on the road - against the Astros in Houston - because a lockout delayed the start of Spring Training, preventing a season opener at Riverfront Stadium.

The Reds were scheduled to start the 2022 season with three games against the Chicago Cubs followed by three with the Pittsburgh Pirates, all at Great American Ball Park.

If there are no additional games canceled after the first two series of the season, the Reds would open the season April 7 against the Braves in Atlanta.
