When the Cincinnati Reds found out that the Baltimore Orioles are second only to the Reds among Brad Franzen's favorite teams - and Franzen is battling colon cancer - a tweet from the Reds' official account told Franzen that a baseball signed by first baseman Joey Votto is on its way.
From the Reds via Twitter:
"Word came out today from the Reds' Twitter feed - chemo, surgery, cancer treatment for a big baseball fan," Bally Sports Ohio play-by-play announcer John Sadak said during the broadcast of Thursday's series finale between the Reds and the Arizona Diamondbacks. "A souvenir, courtesy of the Baltimore Orioles. And Brad Franzen, who is undergoing that fight, said the Orioles are his second favorite organization for life. But he's a Reds fan. Reds got word of that, and a signed Joey Votto ball is on its way. Trying to pick him up, give him some inspiration. ... And of course our prayers and thoughts and well wishes for a quick and full recovery. ... Cancer an insidious foe but has touched all of us in some way."
Franzen's reaction via Twitter:
Earlier, when Franzen's friend, Jacob Rogers, held up a sign asking the Baltimore Orioles' Trey Mancini - who underwent surgery last year for colon cancer - to sign a ball for Brad for extra encouragement, the Orioles tweeted a photo of a signed ball from Mancini and said the team is rooting for Brad.
Franzen responded by expressing gratitude, adding that he's a Reds fan but that the Orioles now rank No. 2:
