Winton Woods dominates Piqua in DII regional

CLAYTON, Ohio – Silencing doubters has been a theme and a rallying cry for the Winton Woods Warriors during their playoff run, and they'll have a chance to continue quieting skeptics after claiming the Division II, Region 8 championship.

The seventh-seeded Warriors (11-3) convincingly beat the top-seeded Piqua Indians, 38-17, Friday at Clayton-Northmont's Premier Health Stadium.

The loss was the first of the season for Piqua (12-1).

"I've told these kids since Day One, Winton Woods has been doing this a long time. This job wasn't about me. It was about coming in and respecting the traditions and the football that's been played at this place," first-year Winton Woods head coach Chad Murphy said. "It means a lot here. It's a testament to our kids the way they've handled change. We've got a new defensive coordinator, a new offensive coordinator, new schemes and they've done nothing but just soak it up and get better and better and better as the weeks went on. I just couldn't be happier for these kids."

Winton Woods senior running back Tyrek Spikes dominated the proceedings, toting the ball 28 times for four touchdowns and 230 yards.

Winton Woods players celebrate after defeating Piqua in an OHSAA high school football game at Northmont High School Friday, Nov. 19, 2021 in Clayton, Ohio.

Spikes darted and weaved his way to two scores early. The second of those touchdowns was a 62-yard run.

That run alone eclipsed Piqua's rushing yardage for the entire game.

"The amount of yards and the amount of attempts and the amount of carries he's had the last four weeks, for a guy his size ... he's literally got the heart of a lion," Murphy said. "I know that's a figure of speech but this is a dynamite dude. The game of football, this program mean a lot to him and he's just on a mission right now."
