At the end of June, the best high school athletes in the area were named during the Cincinnati High School Sports Awards. Tonight, find out who is the best in the state.
The Ohio High School Sports Awards, presented by Mercy Health, will name the top athletes in most state sanctioned sports from across the state. The show is set to begin at 8 p.m. on the event website and will be hosted by sports broadcasters Seth Greenberg and LaPhonso Ellis.
Seth Greenberg is an ESPN basketball analyst, member of the College Gameday team and former collegiate basketball coach.
Before his position at ESPN, Greenberg coached basketball for 34 years, the last 22 of those spent as a head coach at Long Beach State, the University of South Florida and Virginia Tech. He has four wins over No. 1 teams in the country and in his nine seasons with Virginia Tech, he attained a 170–123 record and earned the ACC Coach of the Year award twice.
LaPhonso Ellis was selected fifth overall in the 1992 NBA draft by the Denver Nuggets. In his rookie season, he averaged 14.7 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks and was named to the 1992–93 All-Rookie first team. He played professionally for eleven years then became an ESPN college basketball analyst in 2009.
And don’t forget the more than 20 professional athletes and coaches as hosts and awards announcers, including Kevin Garnett, Chipper Jones, T.J. Watt, Katie Ledecky, Kerri Walsh Jennings and Aaron Rodgers.
Athletes of the Year in 25 nationally recognized sports will move on after tonight to the national USA TODAY High School Sports Awards show, presented by U.S. Polo Assn., airing Aug. 5. Those that will move on will be posted on each state’s website. Find them all here.
Tonight’s show will be available to watch for free on the event website, thanks to the continued support of sponsors. The awards show will highlight players of the year in many sports, the male and female athletes of the year, coach of the year and several special awards.
The show will continue to be available on the website after it airs so you can share with friends and family as much as possible.
Because the high school season has been adjusted by COVID-19, some sports that have finished too late might not be featured, but honorees and winners will be featured on the show website.
