Former Cincinnati Reds fan favorite Brandon Phillips is celebrating a 2021 Atlantic League Championship for the Lexington Legends on Tuesday night as a player and co-owner of the title-winning independent team.
The Legends defeated the Long Island Ducks, 3-1, in the best-of-five championship series.
Phillips had seven hits - including a home run - and five RBIs in the series. He was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI in Tuesday's title-clinching 13-2 win.
J.J. Hoover, Phillips' former teammate with the Reds, started Game 3, allowing just one run in six innings of work in Lexington's 6-3 win.
In August, Phillips was 3-for-6 with two home runs - including a grand slam - and eight RBIs in the Lexington Legends' 26-12 rout of the Gastonia Honey Hunters. Hoover started the game for the Legends and earned the win despite allowing nine earned runs and 12 hits in five innings.
