Marine who criticized Afghan withdrawal released from military prison


Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller, an officer in the Marine Corps with ties to the Cincinnati area who received national attention after criticizing leaders over the pullout from Afghanistan, has been released from detention. 

A Marine Corps spokesman confirmed to CBS News that he was released from the brig Tuesday. 

"Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller Jr. is being released from confinement today, Oct. 5, 2021, as a result of a mutual agreement between Lt. Col. Scheller, his defense counsel, and the Commanding General, Training Command," the spokesperson said in a statement.

The spokesperson declined to provide any additional details. 

Scheller, formerly a commander of Advanced Infantry Training Battalion at the School of Infantry East located at Camp Geiger in Jacksonville, North Carolina, was held in pretrial confinement at Camp Lejeune.
