THE WAY. COURTIS: A ROAD IN THE EAST END, LIKELY CLOSED FOR WEEKS AFTER A MASSIVE WATER MAIN BREAK. GOOD EVENING. I’M COURTIS FULLER. MOLLIE: AND I MOLLIE LAIR. AM THE BREAK CAUSED SO MUCH DAMAGE IT ACTUALLY CREATED A SINKHOLE THAT SWALLOWED A CAR. WLWT NEWS 5’S HELENA BATTIPAGLIA IS LIVE WITH THE LATEST TONIGHT. HELENA: THIS WATER MAIN BREAK WAS MASSIVE AND CAUSED A LOT OF DAMAGE. THE WATER DEPARTMENT IS STILL HERE TONIGHT, NEARLY 10 HOURS AFTER THIS HAPPENED, DRAINING WATER FROM THIS SINKHOLE. AND ACCORDING TO FIRE OFFICIALS, SOME FAMILIES ARE DISPLACED FOR NOW. THE WORST WATER MAIN BREAK CREWS IT IS HERE HAVE EVER DEALT WITH. A CAR SWALLOWED BY THIS MASSIVE SINKHOLE CREATED BY THE BURST. >> WE BELIEVE IT WAS PARKED THERE AND THE WATER MAIN RUPTURED, IT WAS RIGHT NEXT TO IT ARE RIGHT BELOW IT. HELENA: THE ROADWAY FRACTURED AND TORN WITH REPAIRS, EXPECTED TO TAKE WEEKS. >> IT WAS JUST PROOF, 60 INCH MAIN. A LOT OF WATER. HELENA: VIDEO FROM NEIGHBORS SHOWS A FLOODED RIVERSIDE DRIVE AROUND 12:20 THIS AFTERNOON MINUTES AFTER THE MAIN RUPTURED. A CONSTANT STREAM OF WATER RUSHING OVER A NEARBY EMBANKMENT WATER SERVICE WAS NOT IMPACTED FOR ANYONE LIVING NEARBY. >> THIS LINE IS A TRANSMISSION MAIN SUMMIT WILL MOVE WATER FROM ONE SIDE OF TOWN TO THE OTHER. THAT IS ITS PRIMARY PURPOSE. IT DOES NOT HAVE HOMES HOOKED UP TO IT. HELENA: CREWS SAY THEY WON’T KNOW THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE UNTIL ALL WATER IS DRAINED. THEY SPENT HOURS DOING JUST THAT. DUKE ENERGY CUT THE GAS LINE TO NEARBY HOMES DISPLACING FAMILIES FOR THE TIME BEING, ACCORDING TO THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. NEIGHBORS SAY THIS WILL CAUSE SOME MAJOR INCONVENIENCES IN THE DAYS TO COME. >> MY SON SCHOOL GOES THAT WAY. MY OTHER TWO DAUGHTERS GOAT UP TO SAINT CLEMENTS AND, SAINT BERNARD, SO DOES IMPACTS A LOT. HELENA: FOLLOWING A STRESSFUL NINE MONTHS NOT SOMETHING ANYONE , WAS HOPING FOR AT THE START OF THIS NEW YEAR. >> WE WENT THROUGH ENOUGH WITH CORONAVIRUS. THE CITY ORDINANCE, CURFEW AT 10:00 P.M.. THIS JUST ADDS TO IT. HELENA: NOW, AGAIN, COMING OUT LIVE HERE, WE WANT TO GIVE YOU ANOTHER LOOK AT THIS DAMAGE. IT REALLY IS STRIKING TO LOOK AT. THE WATER DEPARTMENT STILL DRAINING THIS WATER, AND HOURS LONG PROCESS THAT IS FAR FROM OVER AT THIS POINT. THE CITY HAS IMPLEMENTED A BOIL WATER ADVISORY AS WELL. A water main break was reported in the East End Saturday in the 2400 block of Riverside Drive. Crews are currently at the scene assessing the damage of the 60 inch water main break at Riverside Drive at Lumber Street and Bayou Street.Neighbors in the area told WLWT News 5 Helena Battipaglia that they heard water rushing down the street around 12:20 p.m.Greater Cincinnati Water Works sent out a press release stating the roads in the immediate area of the water main break will be closed until further notice. Greater Cincinnati Water Works also said that water service in the area was not impacted but residents could have seen lower water pressure than normal.Officials tell us some families have been displaced for the time being. A boil advisory has been issued for residents who live in 758 to 766 on Steiner Street and 3406 to 3648 on Hillside Avenue as a result of the water main break.A car was swollen in water at the scene.
