Mom accused of stabbing 3-year-old neighbor competent to stand trial


A Deerfield Township mother accused of stabbing her 3-year-old neighbor has been found competent to stand trialXiaoyan Zhu, 46, is accused of repeatedly stabbing a 3-year-old boy while he waited at a bus stop with his older brother. The incident took place March 4 outside their homes on Charleston Park Drive in Deerfield Township.Her attorneys placed her competency in question. But following an evaluation, Judge Donald Oda ruled Zhu is competent to stand trial. "Examination of (the child's) coat were that there were nine stab wounds that entered a coat. Three of which then penetrated into his body — two in the back, one in the neck. The nine stab wounds in the coat are all centered around the neck area," said assistant Warren County prosecutor Travis Vieux.Vieux said in April that the tip of the ceramic knife remains lodged in the child's body."The placement is very near his spine, and the risks for surgical removal may be greater than leaving it in place. The doctors are continuing to evaluate that," Vieux said.Defense attorney Nick Graman said Zhu is a college graduate, has strong ties to the community and has no criminal history."Since this incident occurred, she spent over a month at Good Sam Hospital in the psych ward where she received intensive treatment," Graman said. "They also indicated that she was diagnosed with major depression with psychotic features."Friends said Zhu is a victim of the pandemic."Since the pandemic, we have not been able to see each other for almost a year. Then we heard that she tried to kill herself, and I think she is a victim," said Dungang Lie, a friend of Zhu's.Zhu faces attempted aggravated murder and felonious assault charges.
