The Cincinnati Public School board met Friday to discuss a vaccine mandate proposal for students who are eligible to receive one.CPS board member Eve Bolton did note that if approved, the mandate would not take effect in the immediate future.The discussion and proposal itself is complicated for a host of reasons, including the reality that some kids cannot easily make their own decision about getting vaccinated.The proposal is based on the recently approved vaccine mandate for all CPS staff members.The proposed mandate for students reads very similarly to that of the staffing mandate.Students who are eligible in accordance with the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines would be required to be fully vaccinated or choose to test every seven days. The deadline was left blank as the proposal has not yet been approved. Just like the staffing mandate, a few exemptions are available for religious or medical reasons. Students who can't receive a vaccination due to medical reasons would need to request an exception under the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Ohio Civil Rights Act.New students would be advised of the mandate and required to present proof of vaccination for enrollment. All vaccine information would remain confidential.In the meeting, it was learned that more than half of CPS staff have not shared their status of being fully vaccinated or choosing the resting option. The deadline to disclose the information is Oct. 1.
