Matt Nagy says Justin Fields will start at quarterback in Cleveland

Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy told reporters Wednesday that rookie Justin Fields will start at quarterback Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, with Nick Foles as the team's No. 2 quarterback.

The announcement suggests that long-time Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton - injured this past Sunday against his former team - is not healthy enough to play this week, as Nagy has described Dalton's status as "week to week" and insisted that Dalton will continue to be the Bears' starter "when healthy."

Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields (1) is thrown down by Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson (91) as he throws in the second quarter of the NFL Week 2 game between the Chicago Bears and the Cincinnati Bengals at Soldier Field in Chicago on Sunday, Sept. 19, 2021. The Bears led 7-0 at halftime.

Dalton underwent an MRI Monday on his injured knee. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that the results confirmed a bone bruise.

The Bears replaced Dalton with Fields after Dalton planted awkwardly on his knee at the end of a second-quarter run.

Dalton returned for one series, but the Bears announced late in the first half that Dalton was questionable to return to the game with the knee injury. Late in the third quarter, Dalton was downgraded to doubtful.
