Great Ohio River Swim rescheduled, organizers cite water quality

The Bill Keating, Jr. Great Ohio River Swim, scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 29, has been postponed until Sept. 19. Organizers say current river conditions are impacting the decision. Recent water samples show an increase in bacteria levels because of rain. More rain in the forecast is also prompting organizers to reschedule the event. “The safety of swimmers is our top priority,” said Miriam Wise, associate director of Adventure Crew, which organizes the event. “Please know that we share your disappointment. Our team has been eagerly awaiting this year’s event and the opportunity to welcome you to the river. We hope that you’re able to join us on Sept. 19.”The event is the only open water swim across the Ohio River and then a swim back. It's a half-mile distance. Caroline Keating, the daughter of Bill Keating Jr. is organizing an alternate event instead. She plans to walk the riverfront from the swim’s starting point at the Public Landing to Theodore M. Berry International Friendship Park and back. That walk starts at 8 a.m. Sunday. The swim is a fundraiser for Adventure Crew, a local nonprofit that offers outdoor recreation opportunities for city teens. Students are challenged to outdoor adventures and to break out of their comfort zones as part of the treks, according to the organization.
