Atlanta Falcons quarterback AJ McCarron tore the ACL in his right knee during the first quarter of his team's preseason loss Saturday to the Miami Dolphins, the team confirmed Sunday per an MRI. He is expected to miss the upcoming NFL season.
McCarron said he was "heartbroken" after suffering the injury, Falcons head coach Arthur Smith told atlantafalcons.com's Scott Bair on Saturday.
"I really feel for AJ McCarron," Smith said. "Any time something like that happens, when it's non-contact, it's tough because you know how much work these guys put into it. I feel for him. We'll get the MRI to confirm, but he's heartbroken. He had bounced back and was out there fighting for his team, trying to get extra yards. I understand injuries are part of the game but there's still a human element. I feel for him."
McCarron - who had been expected to back up Atlanta starter Matt Ryan this season - was drafted by the Bengals in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft and spent his first four seasons in Cincinnati.
The Falcons announced in April that they signed the free-agent quarterback to a one-year deal.
McCarron appeared in two games for the Houston Texans last season, completing one pass for 20 yards.
In 17 career games for the Bengals, Oakland Raiders and Texans, McCarron has completed 109 of his 174 attempts for 1,173 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions.
McCarron quarterbacked the Bengals in their 18-16 playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Jan. 2016.
