An Ohio lawmaker plans to introduce legislation that would ban schools from mandating students wearing masks. State Rep. Mike Loychik (R-Bazetta) said the bill will not prohibit faculty, staff and guests from wearing masks or from the school imposing a mandate on them."With our children returning to the classroom, based off of the outcry I've heard from constituents I believe this is a decision that should remain optional and up to the discretion of parents on whether their child needs to wear a mask - not a mandate from schools receiving public taxpayer funds," said Loychik.Loychik cited a report from to the American Academy of Pediatrics, only 0.2%-1.9% of all child COVID-19 cases resulted in hospitalizations and 0.00%-0.03% of all child COVID-19 cases resulted in death.Loychik said he is currently seeking cosponsors of the bill. The decision comes shortly after another Republican lawmaker introduced a bill that would prohibit schools from mandating face masks in the classroom.Senate Bill 209 was introduced by Republican Sen. Andrew Brenner. The bill would prohibit the state school board, department of education or any school district from requiring students, teachers or other employees from wearing a facial covering in a public education setting.This includes any in-person instruction, or extracurricular activities like athletics.The bill states a student or teacher can choose to wear a mask on his or her own accord, but they will not be required.Read the full legislation here.
