Young girl fighting cancer plays special role in Madeira’s Independence Day celebrations


Madeira's Independence Day parade and celebration are events the community looks forward to every year.This year, a special girl was asked to play a major role in the festivities.Ella Ellison, 11, was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer in March. She has undergone rounds of chemo and major arm surgery since.Ella and her family were specifically asked to participate in the parade, and later that night, Ella helped detonate the fireworks show."I love all the support and I love our community and that they came together and did that for me," Ella said.The city's Independence Day celebration is a yearly tradition, special to all those who live there. "Ella in our community has been deeply supported in her fight against her current illness, but we really think this is something where she can show her strength, it’s a big fireworks display so she’s going to kick off something magical and beautiful for the community," Parks and Recreation board chair Anne Horne said.Ella's family has been raising money for pediatric cancer since Ella's diagnosis.They're having a birthday fundraiser for pediatric cancer research July 25th at McDonald Commons Park.
