Nick Travieso, a first-round pick (14th overall) of the Cincinnati Reds in the 2012 Major League Baseball draft, signed with the Kansas City Monarchs of the independent American Association of Professional Baseball, according to an announcement Wednesday via Twitter from the team.
Travieso, a right-handed pitcher, didn't pitch in the Majors for the Reds. They released him in June 2019 when he was pitching for the Billings Mustangs on a rehab assignment.
Shoulder injuries forced Travieso, 27, to miss the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
Travieso had a 3.84 ERA in 23 starts at Double-A Pensacola in 2016.
In the recent Puerto Rican Winter League season, Travieso threw nine scoreless innings for Mayaguez, with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Last week, the Reds signed Tyler Naquin - drafted 15th overall in 2012 by Cleveland, one pick after Travieso - to a minor-league deal.
The Los Angeles Dodgers drafted shortstop Corey Seager four picks after Travieso in that draft. Players seled later in that round included Michael Wacha (Cardinals), Lucas Sims (Braves), Marcus Stroman (Blue Jays), Jose Berrios (Twins), Stephen Piscotty (Cardinals), Mitch Haniger (Brewers), Joey Gallo (Rangers), Lance McCullers Jr. (Astros), Matt Olson (A's) and Jesse Winker (Reds).
Last month, the Kansas City T-Bones announced they'd be known as the Monarchs, named after the team that dominated the Negro Leagues from 1920-61.
