Trenton native and former Edgewood High School standout swimmer Zach Apple won his second gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics by helping Team USA win the men's 4x100m medley relay Sunday morning.
Apple, who is swimming in his first Olympic Games, joined Caeleb Dressel, Ryan Murphy and Michael Andrew in a record-breaking effort. Apple anchored the medley relay to a time of 3:26.78, breaking a 12-year-old record by .50 of a second. Americans have never lost in the event at the Olympics.
Social media reactions:
Earlier this week, Apple won a gold medal in the men's 4x100 freestyle relay. Apple anchored that relay as well, and recorded a relay-best split of 46.69. He had a 0.05-second exchange.
Apple, who starred at Auburn and later Indiana University, earned a spot on Team USA with a runner-up finish in the 100-meter freestyle during the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials.
