Nick Castellanos, Jesse Winker in elite company

Editor's note: This is an excerpt from Thursday's story about the Cincinnati Reds outfielders being named starters in the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

Cincinnati Reds outfielders Jesse Winker and Nick Castellanos were announced as National League All-Star starters Thursday, selected through the fan vote. It was the first time either player was picked for an All-Star team. They’ll be joined in the Nation League’s starting outfield by Atlanta’s Ronald Acuña Jr.

Shortstop Zack Cozart was the organization's last All-Star Game starter in 2017.

The Reds haven’t had two starters in the All-Star Game since Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips started alongside each other on the right side of the infield in 2013. The last time the Reds had two outfielders starting together was Frank Robinson and Gus Bell in 1956.

Cincinnati Reds left fielder Jesse Winker (33) and right fielder Nick Castellanos (2) receive a standing ovation as they are announced to have been named to the All-Star Game roster in the fifth inning of the MLB National League game between the Cincinnati Reds and the San Diego Padres at Great American Ball Park in downtown Cincinnati on Thursday, July 1, 2021. The Reds won 5-4 on a walk-off single, with the bases loaded, off the bat of Tyler Stephenson.
