A 6-year-old Symmes Township boy was honored Thursday night for helping save his little cousin's life as she was drowning in a hot tub.Holden Patrick Smith was on vacation in North Carolina with his family last year, when he noticed 3-year-old Magnolia at the bottom of the hot tub."When she went in the hot tub I tried to get her out but she was too heavy," 6-year-old Holden said.After he couldn't pull her out himself, Holden then yelled for help.Life-saving CPR was administered before paramedics arrived, and it's the only reason little Magnolia is with her family today, and why Holden is now known as a community hero.The Loveland-Symmes Fire Department gave Holden the Citizens Life Saving Award before a crowd of family, friends, teachers and classmates.He's the youngest recipient of the award in Symmes Township."He knew something was wrong and he acted on it. That's why we recognize him as a hero," Deputy Fire Chief Billy Goldfeder said.Fire officials said these situations don't usually pan out like this. Each year, hundreds of children drown in swimming pools.They are hoping this incident and Holden's recognition serve as a reminder to be safe and alert by pools during the upcoming summer months.Holden is even an official Loveland-Symmes firefighter, starting today.The fire department wanted to honor Holden last year, but since the incident happened at the height of the pandemic, they had to postpone the ceremony.Holden was only 5 years old when the incident took place.
