Mother found competent to stand trial in killing of her 6-year-old son, James Hutchinson

Brittany Gosney, 29, was arraigned for the murder of her son, James Robert Hutchinson, 6, Monday, March 1, 2021 in Middletown Municipal Court. On April 26, she was found competent to stand trial on those charges.

Brittany Gosney has been ruled competent to stand trial in the death of her son, 6-year-old James Hutchinson.

Butler County Common Pleas Judge Noah Powers made the ruling Monday after Gosney completed a psychiatric evaluation.

Powers said Gosney was found to have an “underlying personality disorder,” but was “not considered to have a severe mental illness.”

The judge said the 29-year-old mother of four from Middletown understood the charges and possible outcomes during her assessment.

Gosney is accused of hog-tying her three children and attempting to abandon them Feb. 26 in a Preble County park where they had taken family trips in the past.

Police said that James grabbed the door handle of the van as Gosney tried to speed away. He fell, suffered a head trauma and died, officials reported.
