With a short bench, multiple fatigued pitchers in the bullpen and two regulars dealing with injuries, the Cincinnati Reds made six transactions before Friday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Most notably, Nick Senzel (left knee inflammation) and Wade Miley (left foot sprain) were placed on the 10-day injured list.
Senzel has not played since Monday's game against the San Francisco Giants. He made a few impressive defensive plays at third base and finished the game, but four days later Senzel went on the injured list for the first time this season.
Miley injured his left foot during his lone at-bat on Wednesday against the Giants. Miley said he tweaked his foot running out of the batter's box in the third inning. After trying to pitch through it, Miley was pulled in the middle of the fifth inning.
The Reds recalled outfielder Scott Heineman and right-handed pitcher Ashton Goudeau.
Heineman was a top-of-the-order hitter for the Triple-A Louisville Bats this season. Heineman can play all three outfield spots, and he also had some experience at first base for the Reds during spring training.
The Reds claimed Goudeau from the Colorado Rockies in May. Goudeau had a 2.79 ERA in two starts with the Bats this season, and he pitched 8 1/3 innings out of the Rockies bullpen this season. Goudeau hasn't pitched in five days, so his arm is well rested.
Cincinnati made an additional move to add depth to the bullpen.
The Reds designated reliever Carson Fulmer for assignment. Fulmer had pitched more innings than any other pitcher in the Reds bullpen this season and made three appearances over the Reds last four games.
The Reds selected the contract of reliever Brad Brach from Louisville. A ten-year veteran, Brach pitched 12 1/3 innings for the New York Mets last season. He was one of the best relievers in baseball between 2015 and 2018 with a 2.83 ERA in 289 innings during that time span.
