AMBERLEY VILLAGE, Ohio (WKRC) - A rapper and two teens turned safecrackers stole $400,000 in cash from a doctor's home safe and went on a spending spree that included jewelry, shoes and strip clubs, police said Thursday.
Rapper Mak Bandz, whose given name is Makyrie Barnes, was indicted by a Hamilton County grand jury in June on two counts of burglary, two counts of safecracking and two counts of possession of criminal tools. The 21-year-old is from Lincoln Heights and has a record deal with 1801 Records. He was taken into custody last weekend.
Amberley Village Police Det. Jim Drake said Barnes broke into the safe at a doctor's home with two juveniles on March 27. One of the juveniles was the doctor's grandson who later confessed.
"Inside it contained over $400,000 in cash," Drake said.
Drake said there were no signs of forced entry at the home and after the burglary, the trio went to Atlanta. Drake said Barnes bought more than $139,000 worth of jewelry from a store in that city and also hired someone to film him at a strip club where he and others tossed around large amounts of cash. A music video posted on social media earlier in July shows Barnes wearing a $41,000 watch bought from the jewelry store.
Drake said the trio returned to Cincinnati from Atlanta four days after the burglary. He said the victim in the case is a well-known member of the community who's helped a lot of people over the years.
"Just an outstanding member of the community. I'm sure he's having a hard time dealing with it," Drake said.
Barnes will be back in court in August. The second juvenile who was involved may be bound over to adult court as early as next week. The case against the doctor's grandson has already been adjudicated in juvenile court.
Barnes posted his $50,000 bail Thursday afternoon. He will be monitored electronically per the court's order.
