When Cincinnati Reds manager David Bell was ejected for the first time this season, back in April in St. Louis, left fielder Jesse Winker said Bell’s ejection was another sign of how his manager had the team’s back.
Two months later, Bell came directly to Winker’s defense. Bell’s second ejection of the year came in a 10-3 win for the Reds over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday at Great American Ball Park.

Winker had a foul tip in the fourth inning that was called strike three. Winker stayed at home plate to show that he disagreed with the call. Bell quickly rushed on the field, entered a shouting match with home plate umpire Marvin Hudson and was tossed from the game.
Then in the Reds next inning at the plate, Cincinnati scored three runs to pull ahead. With the win, the Reds improved to 31-31 and reached .500 for the first time since May 16.
In the fifth inning, Reds first baseman Joey Votto started a two-out rally with no one on base with a single to right. Third baseman Eugenio Suárez, catcher Tucker Barnhart and shortstop Kyle Farmer then got consecutive hits, turning a one-run lead into a four-run lead.
When the Reds played the Rockies in May, Cincinnati dropped the first two games of the series to go under .500. The second time around, the Reds took care of business against a team with the third worst record in the National League by winning the first two games of the series.
For the second straight game, the Reds scored at least 10 runs. In Saturday’s win, right fielder Nick Castellanos had his 18th multi-hit game over his last 26 games, and Votto had a go-ahead RBI single in the third inning.
When starting pitcher Wade Miley left the game in the seventh, he handed a 9-3 lead to the bullpen.
