Wordle continues to be free for now, but players who are concerned about the future of the viral word game can use a simple trick that may preserve Wordle in its current form.
The game was recently bought by the New York Times, and many players worry it will be only a matter of time before Wordle either requires users to pay or to create an account with their email.
Wordle runs in a browser, and all of the game’s code is saved as plaintext on the Wordle website, according to Gizmodo. So players who want to continue playing the current version can right-click in their browser and save Wordle as an HTML file on their desktop.
That trick could also let players play the original file offline, but works more easily on desktop computers than on mobile devices.

For the uninitiated, Wordle is a browser-based game where players have to guess a five-letter word in six attempts. A big part of its allure comes from social media posts highlighting the strategies players use to solve that day's puzzle.
The Times said it had acquired the game from creator Josh Wardle for a price "in the low seven figures." The newspaper said Wordle will initially stay free for new and existing players.
But those determined to keep accessing the game as it currently exists, can go to Wordle’s website, right-click on the page, or use a drop-down menu depending on your browser of choice; Choose "save page as a webpage," or similar option; and save it to your desktop computer.
Players should then see an HTML file on their desktop and a folder labeled "wordle_files." A click on the HTML file should open the game in the browser, even while playing offline.
Keep in mind there may be some glitches, but players will have the option to test their wits on the h-o-u-s-e.
