In a digital ad that dropped within minutes of Johnson's entry to the race, Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson charged that Johnson "wants to keep on being just another corrupt millionaire politician looking out for their own interests."
Alex Lasry, on leave from his executive job with the Milwaukee Bucks, said: "Whether it's his conspiracy theorizing, fealty to Donald Trump, or total indifference towards helping working Wisconsinites, Ron Johnson has shown time and time again that he isn't up to the task of representing the people of Wisconsin."
State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski, another leading Democrat in the race, said: “Nothing shows just how much Ron Johnson has left Wisconsin and our working families behind than announcing his re-election in a New York-based, Wall Street newspaper. Ron Johnson has failed Wisconsinites — looking out for corporate special interests and promoting conspiracy theories, not helping us.”
For months, Johnson weighed the decision to go for a third term, even as he often found himself entangled in two searing national episodes: the fallout from the 2020 presidential election and the struggle to contain the coronavirus pandemic.
