Rylan Wotherspoon has learned to handle adversity in his golfing career.
Wotherspoon used a clutch bunker shot late in the round to hold off Ryle senior Christopher Harpum and pull away for his third consecutive Region 7 individual championship.
Wotherspoon shot a 6-under 65 to beat Harpum by four shots Tuesday at Lassing Pointe Golf Course. He will lead the local qualifiers into the KHSAA state tournament Oct. 8-9 in Bowling Green, where he was state runner-up last year.
The senior, who has committed to the University of Cincinnati, lost in a playoff for the title last year and has learned from that
“I’ll just rest up but not let up on my practice,” Wotherspoon said. “I’ll just go there and try to get the job done. Last year was a good performance. I just came up short in the playoff. There are a few things I could have done a lot better and I’ll get it figured out in the practice round.”
Wotherspoon started slow Tuesday, scoring 1-over through three holes. With three birdies over the next six holes, he made the turn at 2-under par, one stroke ahead of Harpum.
Wotherspoon led Harpum by a stroke heading into the 14th hole, which is a par-3 with a narrow green guarded by water in front.
Both Harpum and Wotherspoon drove into bad lies surrounding the green. Harpum narrowly avoided the water and scrambled to make a bogey.
Wotherspoon was in a spot where he had to choose between keeping the ball in a bad lie or getting relief to a nearby bush where he might not get a full swing on the club. He chose to hit out of a bunker, and flopped the ball within three feet, then saved par. Harpum had to scramble to make bogey and fell two shots behind.
“Bogey was a great score from where he was,” Wotherspoon said. “He did a great job there. The bunker was kind of wet and kind of muddy, so if I could take a drop, that would be good. My nearest point would have left me in a bush. I just decided to play it and took a full swing at it. It kind of freed me up. I just let it flow (after that) and hit some good putts.”
After that hole, Wotherspoon birdied holes 15-17 and two-putted for par to finish 18.
“It feels great,” he said. “I was really proud of my performance. I didn’t have a great start, but I was able to keep my composure and rally, and beat a good player. I knew if I could trust my abilities trust my practice that I would catch fire somewhere, get a few birdies to drop.”
Harpum, who has Division I offers, led Ryle to a 13-shot win over Covington Catholic for the team championship and the lone team berth to the state tournament.
“I’m really glad we won as a team and got to state," Harpum said. "Last year we had a really good chance and this year we solidified it. We were solid. I was happy with finishing second. I would have liked to have won, but I did my best."
It was Ryle’s eighth tournament win this season, which is a program record according to head coach William Zapp.
Zapp said Harpum missed one green today, and Ben McDaniel missed two on his way to a 72. Zapp said all five of his starters have finished an 18-hole tournament even par or better this season, and Harpum had his third round in the 60s.
“I got five good players,” Zapp said. “Any one of them can get hot and shoot. All five have shot even or better in a tournament. That’s a huge deal for us when our five man can be the low scorer.”
Under KHSAA rules, seven individuals not on the champion team earn state berths. CovCath had three of those qualifiers and St. Henry two.
Cooper swept the individual titles for the second straight year, as Reagan Ramage repeated as Region 7 girls champion. She led the Jaguars to the team title, as Cooper players took the top four individual spots.
Highlands won the boys Region 8 championship Tuesday, led by individual champion Joel Craft.
Grant County’s Emma Lillai won the Region 8 girls title and led severa local individual qualifiers to the state meet. The girls state meet is Oct. 5-6.
