Some 50 Afghan refugees coming to Cincinnati in hopes of building a new life need immediate assistance, longer-term support – and a warm welcome.
Ohio received notification from the federal government that 855 Afghan evacuees will come to Ohio through the U.S. Department of State’s Afghan Placement and Assistance Program. Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio will help 50 of those evacuees resettle here. Indiana will resettle 490 evacuees. Kentucky will resettle 850.
The U.S. Department of State’s Afghan Placement and Assistance Program is resettling an initial group of 37,000 evacuees nationwide.
Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio is spearheading local resettlement efforts. Here are five ways the organization says that you can help.

Volunteer
If you can do things such as help refugees set up housing, teach language classes, drive families to and from medical appointments and mentor youths, sign up to volunteer. The charity is also looking for people including people who have trucks and vans that can help move furniture in and help clean apartments and houses. Donate money
Visit the Catholic Charities website if you can donate money to help get families on their feet by securing them things such as housing, jobs and language lessons.
Provide immediate housing
Newly arrived refugees in Cincinnati receive supportive services from Catholic Charities’ Refugee Resettlement program. This includes placement in furnished housing. Call 513-672-3722 if you are a landlord with space to share.
Contribute household items
If you can donate things such as furniture, bedding, pots and pans, fans, trash cans and garbage bags, call Catholic Charities at Call 513-672-3722.
Offer jobs
Refugees are legally allowed to work immediately upon arrival in the U.S. Staff and volunteers work with each individual to assess their existing skills, assist with resumes, job applications and job interviews, provide employment readiness training and help manage expectations. Call 513-672-3723 if you are an employer willing to hire refugees with job skills that meet the needs of your business.
