The good news is that the Cincinnati Reds regained a slim lead over the San Diego Padres in the National League wild-card standings with the Padres' 9-1 loss Monday night.
The bad news is the Padres aren't alone 1/2 game back of Cincinnati. The St. Louis Cardinals also are within 1/2 game of the Reds after defeating the Mets, 7-0, on Monday night in New York.
The Reds have 18 games remaining in the 2021 Major League Baseball season. The Cardinals and Padres each have 19 games left.
The Reds are 75-69. The Padres are 74-69. The Cardinals are 74-69.
The Reds were off Monday before starting a three-game series against the Pirates in Pittsburgh on Tuesday. The Padres play three more games against the Giants. The Cardinals play two more against the Mets.
The Philadelphia Phillies, idle Monday, trail the Reds by 2 1/2 games. The Mets trail Cincinnati by 3 1/2 games.
