Friday’s quarterfinal matchups at the Western & Southern Open

Friday's action at the Western & Southern Open features five of the top eight men's singles players and the women's singles quarterfinals feature five players who have won at least one Major title and/or held the World No. 1 ranking.

In the women's quarterfinals, World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty faces French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova and two-time W&S Open finalist Angelique Kerber takes on two-time Major champion Petra Kvitova. Jil Teichmann, who upset World No. 2 Naomi Osaka Thursday, competes with Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic and former World No. 1 Karolina Pliskova draws Paula Badosa.

It's only the fifth time in the Open Era and the 11th time in tournament history that five of the top eight men's seeds have made it to the quarterfinals.

Top-seeded Daniil Medvedev became the 19th player in the Open Era to reach three consecutive W&S Open quarterfinals and faces No. 7 seed Pablo Carreno Busta. Eighth-seeded Casper Ruud is the first Norwegian player to reach the W&S Open quarterfinals in the Open Era, taking on Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Alexander Zverev.
