Covington’s KungFood Chu’s AmerAsia selling frozen dumplings to support employees while closed


The public is rallying around a Northern Kentucky restaurant after an appliance in its kitchen broke forcing it to close for several weeks.KungFood Chu's AmerAsia posted on Facebook Friday saying its kitchen hood broke and owners are waiting for parts or a new unit to get its kitchen back up and running.The Covington restaurant posed the idea of selling frozen dumplings to support its 20 employees while its restaurant is closed and the restaurant received an overwhelming response."Y’all … your response has been overwhelmingly in support of selling frozen dumplings! They should be available for sale starting on Monday," KungFood Chu's AmerAsia posted on Facebook Saturday.Owners said they would also be providing a limited menu of small plates available to support its employees financially. The menu includes smashed cucumbers for $3, cold beef salad for $4, a combo plate (cucumbers and beef) for $6 and steamed dumplings for $5.50. There will be a tip jar placed at the restaurant for those wishing to donate cash. KungFood Chu's AmerAsia has had a difficult year. In January, the Covington restaurant's head chef died Sunday from COVID-19-related complications.The 51-year-old was known for cooking with passion, putting customers first and touching lives with his food and his smile."He always put the customers first. They were his first priority while he was at work," said his son, Chris Vargas Guerrero."The only good thing about the last year and a half was being able to afford to keep on all of our employees while still paying them a fair wage, even while we closed," stated a Facebook post from KungFood Chu's AmerAsia on Monday. " Regardless of the outcome with insurance, we will take responsibility for our staff, paying them their full wage in addition to a majority, if not all of the tips that they would have earned."The Chu family estimates the cost of doing so to be between $20,000 and $40,000, depending on how long the restaurant remains closed. This cost does not include the repairs and replacement parts for its hood system.In addition to its frozen dumplings and limited menu, KungFood Chu's AmerAsia has set up a GoFundMe to ensure its employees will be getting paid."We will pay it forward 10x back after we recover from this hardship - that’s our promise to you and to our beloved community," the Chu family wrote on Facebook.As of Tuesday afternoon, the community has raised $14,222 for the restaurant through the GoFundMe.
