A basketball game was held Saturday at New Prospect Baptist Church to bring community members and officers with the Cincinnati Police Department together.
Founders of the Pickett project, Angela and Terry Pickett, organized the event to inspire unity and trust between police and community members.
"I love my city. I love Cincinnati, and I want to make a difference here. I want our city to look different from any other city and be an example where the police officers and community can come together," Angela Pickett said.
They mixed the teams instead of making the game officers versus community members to encourage everyone to work together.
All of the jerseys had the word "unity" written across the front.
"They'll be able to work together and bond. Then next time, maybe they'll recognize each other and feel more open about reaching out for help," Terry Pickett said.
He is hopeful the game will be a step in the right direction to building the trust he believes is lacking between law enforcement and his community.
"I want people to take positivity away from this event. That's what we need to bridge the gap between the community and police. We know they're out there protecting and serving every day, so we need to be encouraging for them. Also, we want to let them know we're here, and when we have issues, we won't be afraid to go to them," Terry Pickett said.
Many people came to watch the game and enjoy one another's company.
The cost of admission was to bring sanitary products that could be donated to those in need.
Angela Pickett said it was very heartwarming to see people come out to enjoy the day.
"I'm overwhelmed with joy. I really am. A lot of people showed up, and I appreciate it," she said.
Hosting community events such as the basketball game is something the Picketts are dedicated to.
The Pickett project began in 2019, and since then, they've worked to bring food to those in need and host family and community outings to bring joy to others.
The couple said they hope to host more events to bring police and community members together in the future.
