For the Florence Y'alls, holiday weekend travel looks a little different.
The Y'alls have played in two-straight road series' this week, starting in southern Indiana against the Evansville Otters.
In Tuesday’s series opener, the Y’alls took a modest 1-0 victory behind the pitching of Kevin Hahn.
"He was very efficient on the mound and gave us a chance to win the game with eight innings with no runs which is super pressing," manager Brian White told the Enquirer. "He got a big time job done when we needed it. It was one of his better outings for sure but he’s capable of doing that anytime he takes the mound.”
Hahn pitched eight scoreless innings and held the Otters to just two hits. The Y'alls recorded three hits during the game, one of which was a solo home run from Joe Lytle that marked the only run of the game.
The Y'alls and Otters met again on Thursday after weather postponed their Wednesday match.
Thursday's double-header was challenging for the Y'alls as they lost 6-0 in the first and 4-2 in the second. The ending was anything other than what the Y'alls could have wanted, specifically on the offensive end.
“The bottom half of our lineup was struggling a little bit and our top half of the lineup seemed like they put a little bit of pressure on themselves to try to get the job done,” White said. “We had guys in scoring position quite a bit but we just couldn’t get those runs across. Obviously not something that we’re proud of or that we like.”
The struggles to cross home plate resulted in the Y'alls sixth loss in their last nine games.
Weekend series against Joliet
The road trip continued West as the Y'alls traveled to Illinois for a weekend series against the Joliet Slammers.
The addition of Johnny Knight from Lake Erie and Axel Johnson from Gateway in the lineup helped lift the Y'alls to a 8-2 victory Friday night in the series opener.
With a tie score of 1-1 entering the eighth inning, the duo ignited the Y'alls offense. Johnson walked in a run and Knight hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in the first run of his Y'alls career.
“It was a good presence to have them in our lineup and I’m happy we were able to get some production out of them," White said.
The Y'alls went on to score seven of their eight runs in the games sixth through eighth innings.
Florence has two more games scheduled at Joliet to finish off the holiday weekend. White said he hopes the team uses those games to change the narrative they molded earlier this week.
“Offense should be rolling around after a bad few games we had in Evansville," White said. "I think that we’re going to get over that pretty soon and as long as we play our game we’ll be fine.”
